I keep hearing this explanation but my experience after 16 years here is the opposite. It's easy to make a Swedish acquaintance. I have lots of Swedes who I could message and ask if they want a fika. They will agree to put it in their calendar for 3 weeks from now. 5 years of continuous lunches and fikas later and they still keep the relationship shallow. No amount of time and investment can get me out of the acquaintance zone with Swedes. There are Swedes I have been having lunches with for years. I find out in a roundabout way that they got married or broke up with their sambo because they never talk to me about anything but the latest TV series. I've never seen their home when it hasn't been cleaned and prepped for an official party. They insist on swishing me when I babysit their kids even though I beg them not to and tell them it's a pleasure (refusal to accept gifts or favours is one of the key ways Swedes reject your attempt to befriend them). For the love of all that is good and Swedish, please make a tutorial for how to get out of the acquaintance zone with Swedes.

I love the sociolinguistic aspects of this; now I might have to learn Swedish just so I can annoy people with a buzzing I. :-) It almost sounds like the Swedish version of the “Valley Girl” speech or the Turkish “Tiki” kids. Kids affecting a sound that they think makes them sound more hip or upper class. Born with a silver spiiin in their mouths. :-)

It's hard for Americans to take a break and realize that the social aspect is just as important as the business meetings. It's when people get to know you as a person and if they want to invest more in you.

The hurdle with Danish language depends of which part of Sweden You come from. I live on an island outside Gothenburg. The dialect where I live is mixed Danish and Swedish due to trade and wars since Viking age. People from Stockholm dose not understand a word of what I say. However, when I go to Northern Denmark /Jylland/ Aalborg etc . I can speak my own dialect and all Danes understands me, ectcept for counting as they have another version of it.Well I manage now

Efter att ha bott i Stockholm i ett år visste jag alla ord förutom vabba! Och jag kan bekräfta att det är otroligt jobbigt att inte kunna använda swish. Det tog mig jättelänge att skaffa. Jag behövde ett personnummer först, vilket var ganska svårt, för att jag fick övertyga skatteverket att jag kommer stanna i Sverige i minst ett år. Telefonnummret blev också en utmaning och om bankkontot vill jag inte ens berätta. xD Meeen, nu kan jag kalla Stockholm mitt hem, slutar SVA3 snart och har en svensk pojkvän. :)

Duktig reminded me of "molodets" from Russian. You usually use it when dealing with someone on a lower skill level that showed achievement. Usually kids or pets. Doing so because you were impressed by a virtuosic performance, for example, would be seen as extremely condescending.
